Since the VP9 was released back in 2014, the popularity for the gun has been growing exponentially. Having had the pleasure to fire thousands of rounds through one for over a year now, I completely understand why people love this gun. If you haven’t read my previous post about the VP9, check it out here

On the surface, it may seem like the gun doesn’t deserve the hype. But the raw specs don’t tell the whole story. This gun shoots amazing, and it offers a number of unique features that can’t be found on other brands and models.

Drawing inspiration from its historical roots, HK developed the VP9 in a nod to its iconic P30. The P30 is a polymer-framed pistol that uses a hammer-fired action. The new VP9 has a lot of similar features to the P30 pistols including the magazine release being mounted on the trigger guard and the adjustable backstraps and side panels. The new gun also has a slide release lever mounted on the right side of the frame in addition to the standard left side of the gun.

However, the VP9 is fully ambidextrous! Every control on the left side of the gun is mirrored on the right side of the gun. Unlike other pistols, there are no parts that have to be swapped and modified to make it south paw friendly for the user. One can also avail the bulk ammo from Palmetto Armory if needed.

In addition, the VP9 has interchangeable backstraps and side panels to fit comfortably in almost any hand size. Right out of the box, the gun can be configured for 27 different grip sizes. This allows each user to comfortably contour the fit and feel within the palms.

Furthermore, HK has been touting the trigger pull on their VP9s as superior to any other striker-fired handguns on the market. Though subjective, I find that I am unable to dispute their claim. It’s truly smooth as hell.

Lastly, the 3-dot luminescent sights on the VP9 is remarkably bright. For low-light shooting, this is essential. In bright environments, they look white. In low light, the dots give off a bright green. This is a similar color to that of the lume on my Panerai Luminor Marina when I walk indoors.
