In 1999, students and staff at Columbine High School were told to hide under library desks while 2 armed gunmen were out in the hallway. The students were told to hide despite having an option to flee the building. As a result, 10 people were killed in that library. It has been 19 years since that fatal day, and why are we still hiding under desks? Since Columbine, we’ve lost 136 people to shooters in schools.

How many more times are we going to hear about a crazed gunman walking into a school armed and ready to kill? How many more innocent children need to die before we wake up and prepare our teachers to fight back? The only solution is self-responsibility: arm school officials and give them a fighting chance. No gunman is going to target a school that can defend itself and fight back.

Every second counts in a school shooting. Calling 911 and waiting for police to arrive isn’t good enough.

What lessons have we learned to save our children? Are your schools still teaching your child to hide in a corner? Why? Come to a free informational meeting to understand about state and federal proactive options for school staff which is not being taught in the schools. There are more options available to save your child than hiding in a corner. Why are the school districts not training staff and students to survive? Let’s work towards creating a greater reality-based training than locking a door in our schools. After all, failure to prepare is preparing for failure.

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need to take such measures. But until that happens, critical thinking suggests that we all exercise our second amendment rights, arm our teachers and school officials to ensure the safety of our children, voice our support and keep a close eye on anti-gun crusaders who want to make our decisions for us. A school should be a safe haven where children can learn and grow. And right now, teaching our teachers to comfortably and effectively fight back against a shooter is the only practical solution.
